We, The Last Men are breaking up. [13 Jul 2009|10:57pm]
My band, who I love and adore, just can't continue with no fans and no money. It's a sad state of affairs, but it's the situation.

We have one last gig and that'll be it all over. It's hard to think of what life will be like without that music in my weeks.

We're playing at Box in Glasgow on wednesday, which is a Free gig, so it'd would be lovely if you could all make it along. I know it's short notice, but it would mean a lot to go out on a high.

I'll hopefully see you then.

Broken Sword 4 thoughts (spoilers!) [15 Apr 2009|02:15am]
[ mood | blank ]

Okay, so I spent a year trying to get my amazingly shit computer to work properly. Thanks to some help from John, I finally got to play it. At first, it was confusing that George wasn't with Nico, but after a short while newbie Anna Maria got a little annoying.

Thankfully, she disapears, George stops being unfunny, and Nico comes back. The classic Broken Sword gameplay works like a charm for the rest of the game. Even when they split, they're still better than Shitface McGee A.K.A. Anna Maria.

The storyline is even well worth it. Sure, Anna spends the whole time switching sides and making 'subtle' nuances and being rubbish, but the story centering around the Ark and the Mafia and the Vatican and it all fits together so well.

However, while it's nice to tie up the Anna Maria storyline, I don't think she was even needed. At all. George could be investigating someone and finds the manuscript that starts the whole thing off. And thats it.

It's good. It's really good. But it doesn't beat BS1. And the entire reason is Anna Maria. It's a shame, because BS3 had an ending which felt like it could finish the series, as did one and two. Number 4 however, had that huge thing happen, and then immediately just cut to credits, without any proper end.

Seriously guys, COME ON!

I really hope that it isn't the final installment, and that we will finally have a happy ending for George and Nico. How hard can it be?

We've not played in what seems like forever (hopefully a feeling I never have to feel again, because I love playing gigs.) So come along tonight and give a cheer, while helping out the Artschool!

New TV for the 08/09 season. [11 Mar 2009|01:51pm]
[ mood | energetic ]
[ music | Adebisi Shank - You Me ]

Last year, there was just too much good new TV to get excited by, even if it turned out to be a bad year for the writers. There was Chuck, Reaper, Burn Notice and Pushing Dasies to name a but a few.

This year however, new shows seemed a little thinner. Ideas that maybe needed fleshing out or space to grow on screen. Unfortunately, with TV as it is now, if you need space to grow, you got to go. It's a shame because some great shows have started out badly and picked up speed, turning them into great, unforgettable shows. Take Buffy for instance. Not that I noticed then, but season one was a little... well... bad. It had it's good points sure, and most of the weeds had gone by season two, but it's difficult to watch season one now without cringing sometimes.

So when a lot of ideas all seem thin, it seems like a big year for cancellations. But so far, I've had a look at the following and they definitely don't seem to be getting cancelled.

The Mentalist
One of my favorites this year, The Mentalist is a 40min drama based around Patrick Jane (Simon Baker), a ex-"psychic" who uses his skills to help the California bureau of investigation. It's not a big concept, but when you get down to it, it's criminally good. Of course, it follows the who-done-it style, but it's how Sherloc- I mean, Patrick Jane ties it all together that makes it worth the watch. Also, the plain faced Cho (Tim Kang) is great too, and adds a lot of comic brilliance with a very simple blank face.
8/10

Dollhouse
I should love this. I really should. I love Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Doc Horrible, and Wheadons writing in general. But this show, however, feels unlike any of previous project of his. The reason being the concept: take some people, erase there minds, and use them as a template to put personalities and characters into their bodies, and take them back out at will. This creates an instant problem. Your main character Echo (Eliza Dushku) has no personality, no way to start growing, so the secondary charachters, who get less screen time, get all the growing. It's odd, and it keeps loosing watchers. I see it lasting until about 12 episodes, then getting canned, save for a big swift kick up the jacksie. It's a real shame that Battlestar Galactica's Tahmoh Penikett chose this project, as his talent is a little wasted on his failing detective role here. It's also a real shame that things aren't going well for Joss Whedon.
5/10

United States Of Tara
If you just looked at this show without seeing the titles, you may think that it's just an indie. But the thing is, this is an idea thats come from Steven Speilberg, and passed onto Diablo Cody of Juno fame for writing. It's all about a woman named Tara (Toni Collette), who has dissociative identity disorder (i.e. multiple personalities). Shes just stopped taking the drugs, to see if her and her family can find the root cause of her illness. She is plauged with three 'alters': Buck, the only male personality, wears large glasses and a trucker hat, swears like a trooper, and causes general mayhem; Alice is a housewife from the 1950s, she often bakes for the family and labels herself as old-fashioned; T is Tara's wild, pot-smoking 16-year old personality, who is provocative in her mannerisms and style of dress (Basically, dresses and acts like a skank. Nice.) This show gives an interesting dynamic on a twisted families life and the inner-workings of living with a tough disease like DID. It's great.
9/10

East Bound And Down
Originally, I wasn't a big fan of this, though I wanted to be. The show stars Danny McBride (Tropic Thunder, Hot Rod, Pineapple Express) as a down on his luck, ex-pro baseball player, who after years of doing nothing, has to move in with his brothers family and become a substitute PE teacher in his old home town. He tries desperately to get back into the Majors, and has delusions of grandeur, in thinking that people still care about him. It's produced by Will Ferral (who turns up in 2 of the 6 episodes, to hilarious effect) and it's pretty funny. The first episode was a little... boring, which is a shame in a six episode run, but since then it's been just great. It's definitely worth a watch, and holds a lot more deapth than what you'd think.
7/10

Important Things With Demetri Martin
Not exactly a show, more of a sketch thing. Demetri Martin (Daily Show, Flight Of The Conchords) hosts his own take on... well, everything. Every episode is based on a talking point (Brains, Chairs, Power etc) and then he simply runs with that and does whatever he wants. It can include songs, sketches (acted and drawn on paper), and just telling jokes. It's really funny and slightly odd, and that's all you can ask for.
7/10

Returning TV next!

Heroes... improving? [17 Feb 2009|11:29pm]
[ mood | surprised ]
[ music | Michael Giacchino - Lost OST ]

"Allways have an objective; Know your endgame before you lift a hand." Sylar, Season 3 Episode 16 of Heroes.

Interesting choice of words in a series that has plodded along without any sense of objective for 2 years. Maybe now they actually have one?

Episode sixteen was actually... good. Not Just ok or rubbish or even Meh, as most of season 3 has been. Good. It's almost hard to say. Charcters were given a chance to breath, speak and, well... have characters, in what feels like forever.

Lets hope it continues, at least until Bryan Fuller comes in and makes Heroes incredible again.

I almost geeked out at this... but then I realized I'm not made of money... [08 Feb 2009|11:42pm]
[ music | We, The Last Men - Bruce's Bones EP ]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=019mu8FTy6M

$700... roughly £470? Damn. The first effect is classy, although I can't think of many uses for that, especially ones in which it would bother me to work at it. The second effect isn't that good, because the clouds look horrible and that would need fixed badly, which is something that I could do, which isn't that great. HOWEVER, that third example is incredible!

I wish I had that much money to throw at Adobe. I might, if everyone helps us to sell out the We, The Last Men EP...

I got stuff! [26 Dec 2008|04:37pm]
[ mood | calm ]
[ music | My grandad snoring, and some York football game on TV... odd. ]

Just by mistake I took this photo so that it says Jector instead of Projector. I had been telling people that was it's nickname anyway, so it works well!

I also got 50 quid and some HMV vouchers, so they will be spent shortly. Also, not pictured because I couldn't bother my arse to go upstairs and pick stuff up is Looney Tunes Magnet maker, Justice league colouring book (What? I'm clearly 10.) and too many sweets. I'm sure theres something I've forgotten.. but I don't know what!

Notes:
-That red and black one that's almost unreadable is the Battlestar Galactica mini-series.
-I did ask for either EA09 or Pro Evo 2009, and even told my rents Santa "They're dead cheap in Game and Gamestation." But, as parents must do in these situations, they got it slightly wrong, and I feel bad for them because they paid almost as much as you'd pay for the 09 version. Still, I can have this until the other comes down in price.
-The two CDs are the Mad Capsule Markets Live CD/DVD (which I bought for daniel, funnily enough) and The Blood Brothers last album. My parents did buy me a third, This Will Destroy You's self titled (an excellent album, if not as immaginative as Young Mountain) which I bought a few months ago after seeing them live! Bummer. Still, it's going to be changed for Young Mountain, which I don't currently own! Hurrah!
-Also, I got Transformers... which I already have. But it's alright since it was in my cousins house, and I figured it'd be better to just let them have that one, while I kept this one.
-Almost half of these were on my Amazon wishlist! Winner for me. That'll be used every year! XD

And why haven't I seen more "Heres what I got" posts!?

Get yer butts in gear :P

New Idea up on my blog! + Life! [13 Sep 2008|03:46pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]
[ music | 65daysofstatic - I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood. ]

I figured that bands who offer more and obviously, are deserving of the more attention. On my 'Hear New Music' blog, I now will give myself a week or so since updating with the actual CDs (002 is coming today/tomorrow!) I will pick and present a single from the previous one, and give links to a few more of their songs.

A wee idea, but one that I hope will work out. The first band is 65daysofstatic so check it!

On a completely random tangent, I never update this thing with personal stuff! Maybe I'm just too boring, or maybe I'm having too much fun doing the things that I'd put in here, to put them in! But here we go...

A few tidbits:
1) I'm happy and content with my life, so Hurrah!
2) I just turned 21 and it wasn't daunting in the slightest! I got an Xbox360 though, so maybe I'm just not going to grow up. Had a huge packed out party at the griffin with loads of family and friends and it was brilliant, I was utterly stoked. I also got Mario Kart Wii and it's fun as hell, as well as 2 graphic novels (Batman Allan Moore collection and Runaways season 2 part 1 (i.e. not Joss Wheadon's bit)) and t-shirts and DVDs and the new Misery Signals album. Awesome birthday!
3) I made lisa watch From Dusk Til Dawn, a film she said she'd hate, and she loved it. Who's right? Moi. Thank you, I'll take my award in the form of a huge gold necklace with my face on the end. Just like Rick Ross.

Hope you're all well. In fact, let's test this, HOW ARE YOU? Reply in comments!

End of transmission.
Carl.
